Image Replacement Document
IRD
An image replacement document is a paper copy of a check created from a digital image. It is legally equivalent to the original check for processing and recordkeeping.
IRDs are also called substitute checks and are permitted under the Check 21 Act. They help banks exchange check images instead of transporting paper.
