What is a SWIFT Code?

A SWIFT code (a.k.a. BIC - Bank Identifier Code) is a unique identification code for banks and financial institutions worldwide. It's used to route international wire transfers to the correct bank. For international transfers, you'll typically need the receiver's SWIFT code and IBAN.

Format of a SWIFT/BIC Code

Every SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters and follows the same structure: 4-letter bank code, 2-letter country code, 2-character location code, and optional 3-character branch code.

For example, DEUTDEFFXXX (Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt) breaks down as:

ComponentCharactersExample
Bank Code4DEUT
Country Code2DE
Location Code2FF
Branch Code3 or 0XXX
  • Bank Code: Identifies the bank — "DEUT" is Deutsche Bank's code.
  • Country Code : ISO country code — "DE" for Germany.
  • Location Code: City or region — "FF" represents Frankfurt.
  • Branch Code: Optional. Identifies a specific branch. "XXX" or omitting it means the head office.
