Papua New Guinean Kina

PGK is the official currency of Papua New Guinea. It is issued by the Bank of Papua New Guinea and is subdivided into 100 toea.

The kina was introduced in 1975 at independence, replacing the Australian dollar. The name derives from a type of shell traditionally used in trade. Papua New Guinea was among the first countries to use polymer banknotes (from 1991). In 2023, the central bank allowed gradual depreciation to address forex issues.
