UYU

Uruguayan Peso

UYU is the official currency of Uruguay. It is issued by the Central Bank of Uruguay (Banco Central del Uruguay) and is subdivided into 100 centésimos.

The current peso uruguayo was introduced in 1993, replacing the nuevo peso. Uruguay operates under a floating exchange rate regime. The Central Bank pioneered a CBDC pilot called e-Peso in 2017. Banknotes are issued in denominations from 20 to 2,000 pesos.
