ETB is the official currency of Ethiopia. It is issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia and is subdivided into 100 santim.
The birr has been Ethiopia's currency since 1945. The name derives from an Arabic word meaning 'silver'. In 2024, Ethiopia liberalized its foreign exchange market and floated the birr, receiving $13.5 billion from international partners to support the transition.
