The ringgit was introduced in 1967, with the name adopted in 1975. During the 1997 Asian financial crisis, it was pegged at 3.80 to the USD until 2005 when it returned to a managed float. 'Ringgit' is a Malay word meaning 'jagged', referring to the serrated edges of Spanish silver dollars.
