MDL
Moldovan Leu
MDL is the official currency of Moldova. It is issued by the National Bank of Moldova and is subdivided into 100 bani.
The leu was established in 1993, replacing the temporary cupon and Russian ruble. The name 'leu' means 'lion' and is derived from Dutch lion thalers. Since 2025, the euro has been the reference currency for setting the official exchange rate, reflecting Moldova's EU orientation.
