RON

Romanian Leu

RON is the official currency of Romania. It is issued by the National Bank of Romania (Banca Națională a României) and is subdivided into 100 bani.

The word 'leu' means 'lion' and derives from Dutch lion thalers. The currency was revalued in 2005 at 10,000 old lei to 1 new leu. Romania plans to adopt the euro in the future as an EU member, but no specific timeline has been finalized.
